To sleep, perchance to dream

"Wake up, my little pixie." An all too-familiar voice whispers softly to Annie. She'd almost forgotten her old nickname. Only one person had ever called her that.

"Hm?" She opens her eyes slowly to find herself cuddled against someone under the willow tree in the old garden under the noon sunshine. Annie looks up and smiles at Stephen. "I guess I drifted off." She murmurs.

"So it seems." He replies.

She reaches up to tuck back a dark curl from his face, looking up into his warm grey eyes. "This shouldn't be possible." Annie sighs, drinking in the sight of him like a man in the desert who has found water for the first time in days. Stephen looks exactly the same as he did the last time she saw him alive. "You're dead, honey."

"And you've grown up." Stephen replies. "More lovely than I'd expected." He remarks with an appreciative look, then shakes his head sadly. "I know I'm dead, but I promised you, remember, that I'd always be here when you needed me."

Annie nods. "Under this very tree, I recall." She recalls warmly, snuggling closer. "I miss you so much...I'm sorry."

"You must know I've missed you, too, but, dear pixie, for what do you apologize?" Stephen asks.

She sighs, "For so much... For not begging you to stay that night, for not looking for you sooner... For leaving France."

Stephen shakes his head and kisses her forehead. "Don't apologize for that." He admonishes, "You no longer had anything holding you to that land, or that time. I was gone and there had never been anything you could have done to stop it. I had to die. To motivate you to find the murderers." He explains. "So that others might live. You know I'm not fond of the thoughtof being pawn, but from this side of it, I see the necessity. I only regret the pain it caused you. Do you understand?"

"I suppose." Annie sighs again. "I'm not complaining or anything, Stephen, dear, but why are you here? How did you know where I am?"

Stephen thinks a moment before answering "You never could hide from me worth shit, Pixie." He teases, "As to the latter, I needed to talk to you. You need to be careful, and to remember that not all is what it seems."

Annie nods, "That much I knew." She replies, thinking of her unexpected blood relation to Etienne, whom she'd previously simply called her Uncle.

Stephen looks as if he's about to say something, but appears to let it go. "And I need to warn you Annie. Something is coming. I'm not allowed to say anything more. Something is coming, and it will make the Angel War look like child's play.

"What should I do?" Annie asks, nervous suddenly.

Stephen shrugs, "Nothing you can do. But remain in condition, improve your skills. When the time comes, be ready."

Annie sits up suddenly in bed, looking around only to find herself still in her room, everything looking oddly normal. She sighs and tries to grasp at the dream, but sleep eludes her.

She gets up and gets dressed, stalking about the house swift and silent as a shadow, deep in thought.

Renee emerges from her room quietly, her bare feet pad down the hallway. She's come out to get a glass of water. Some reason, she can't sleep quite like she wants to tonight. No idea why.

It's then, on her way to the kitchen, that she spies a firelight moving fast along the walls of the house. She decides to follww.

Annie's too deep in thought to hear her pursuer and wanders to the walled courtyard behind the house. She sits beside the little pot where she'd planted the seeds from the roses left in her room. "What did you mean, Stephen?" She murmurs.

Glass of water all but forgotten, she trails after the light, not figuring out it's Annie until she comes into the courtyard.

"Bad dream?" she inquires softly.

Annie looks up and shrugs, "Not bad." she smiles and sighs, remembering the feeling of being snuggled close to her Stephen and wished she could reclaim that feeling. "Not bad at all." She hugs herself, "Just... strange. I don't really understand it all."

Was she cold? There was something... maybe it was the Bond with Etienne that was letting her know something wasn't quite right. She sits down beside Annie, drawing her feet up onto the seat so her knees were there to rest her head on. She's still a tad sleepy.

Renee blinks sleepily. She knew what that meant. It would be like the sleepless nights she spent the years after Connor had been killed. Every time she closed her eyes there he'd be. She'd drink to pass out and wake the next morning/evening/whatever, just to repeat the apptern all over again. Right at the fore of her mind he'd remained and it drove her to a breaking point she'd never known before. Annie, on the other hand, was either really good at hiding how she was really feeling... or something serious had occurred.

"How'd he look?" she asked groggily, stifling a yawn.

"Same as ever." She shrugs. "Same as the last time I saw him alive. It wasn't an unpleasant dream; the spells in the room would have kept those away... We were snuggled under the willow tree in the garden. He looked the same as the last time I saw him." She says again, "But I wasn't fifteen anymore...which he noticed." She smiles and blushes, remembering his appreciative look. "It was noon, and my first thought was that I couldn't belive I'd fallen asleep. It seemed so normal. I reminded him he was dead, and he said that he promised he'd always be there when I needed him. He said that his death was part of a larger plan, because I was supposed to make sure that his murderers were stopped. He said he didn't like the thought of being a pawn, but that he understood why it was needed."

She thinks a moment before continuing. "Then he said that I need to be careful... that "not all is what it seems." And he said something is coming. Something worse than the thing with the Angels in the Nightside. He said he wasn't allowed to say what, but that I should hone my skills, stay in condition, and to "be ready"... whatever that means."

"Alright then, that's enough for me. We'll focus more on combat skills, do some heavy sparring... doesn't matter if you cut me. We'll be ready for it, regardless of what Etienne wants." She grins. "A girl's gotta be prepared." She sighs out a heavy breath which actually a disguised yawn. "Alright then, looks like we've got a fight on our hands." She stretches with a noise from the back of her throat. Gives her an excuse to train more extensively...

"Thanks. You too." She pads back into the house, into the kitchen for her glass of water after all. She finishes it and leaves it on the counter, knowing the magic would kick in and take it away.

Her eyes are half-closed when she pushes her door open enough to slip in quietly, not wanting to disturb Etienne from his rest. Must've been nice for him to be able to do so again. There's only so many infomercials one man can watch. Her thoughts are of him as she gazes at him, smiles and closes her eyes into the welcoming arms of slumber...

The sun is bright upon the hill, the water in the lake calm, calm and clear enough to see the bottom. Renee's hair whips around her face as the grass sways in the winds, her arms wrapping around her to fight off the chill. A rusted over claymore is stuck in the ground below, marking the plot where Heather had been buried. His favourite place in the world. There's a distinct presence behind her but she pays it no mind. It's her dream, it couldn't be bad. Thick, strong arms wrap around her and slide up her arms to her shoulders, still higher... and over her neck. Protecting her from any harm. Her eyes widen with shock and she spins around in that hold, amazed at what's before her.

"Connor?" The man in question smiles down at her, the setting sun reflecting in his currently-green eyes. He is just as she remembered him when he walked out of the antique shop after having given her his wedding band. To protect her. She'd been so angry with him that day. "What? How?"
"This is a dream, dove. Ah'm deid."
"I know..." How could she
not know he was dead? Her eyes mist over for a moment but she fights them off successfully. A soft, mournful smile emerges. "It's been so long."
"Aye. Fer ye it has. Twenty years isn't so long up against centuries." He takes her hands and spins her around, sighs a breath of appreciation and takes her in. "Ye haven't changed a bit."
At this, she has to chuckle. A light blush colours her face. "How can I? I'm immortal."
"Heh heh heh. Hair's longer." His usual laugh. He rubs her hands in his, thumbs over her ring fingers. The left is now bare but this doesn't seem to phase him. All the little nuances she'd taken for granted. Again the tears want to make an appearance but she won't let them.
"Connor, why are you here?"
"Ah've come te warn ye. There's a maelstrom brewin' over the waters..."
"And I need to be prepared and ready for the fight? I know, Annie told me." He laughs again and her face struggles not to be sad. He sees this in her and cups her face in his expansive palm. Her eyes finally tear up.
"Ye remember when we were last here?" She nods, looking back out over the hill.
"Yeah. We got married here, exchanged vows, rings. We spoke of forever." Hot, bitter tears streamed down her face.
"Ah'm sorry ah left ye, m'wee dove. Ah know now o' the sacrifice that ah had te make... bit ah didnae want ye te be hurt." She can't hold her sorrow in anymore. A cry escapes her throat, she sniffs back.
"I know. You swore to love me, to honour and respect me... and to protect me at all costs. I know what that entailed now." She flashes back in her mind to the day he'd left again, and how she'd ripped her own ring off her hand and thrown them both, cracking one of the cases that displayed antique silverware along the back wall. She'd returned that very night when all was quiet, dark and still to retrieve them as she hadn't stopped crying since he'd gone...

Again she comes back to the hill in the Highlands; the light is slowly growing dimmer. His eyes are blue again. Still as piercing and hypnotic as ever, looking straight through her. He knew what she was thinking, always had. The Prize had allowed him to listen to every thought every person in the world was having.

She looks down at their hands that are joined, grips then looks back to him.
"What, dove?" he breathes, already knowing what she has to say, as he'd always done.
"I'm sorry...."
"Why? Ah'm proud ye've found someone who loves ye as well as ah did, an' still dae."
"I feel like I've betrayed you."
"Ach, havers! Ye weren't the first ah've taken th' hand of..."
"I know, but..."
"Bit nothin'. Ye've done nothin' wrong, Renee." She dropped her head again but Connor knew that trick, tipped her head back up to him and made her look at him so she heard him. "Nothin'." The weight on her shoulders miraculously lifts and she gazes up at him with longing. "I really love him, Connor."
"Aye, dove. He loves
ye."
"Yeah."
"Ye have m' blessin', lassie."
She stares up at him. He's only slightly taller than Etienne, but she's craning her neck higher all the same. He runs a finger over her temple to move the hair from her face. She had a habit of hiding behind her hair. Her thoughts drift to Annie and Connor nods.
"She remind me of ye. Determined te be able te fight fer herself."
She nods in return. "It's why I want to make sure she knows how."
"An' ye should. She'll be very helpful in the future."
"Can you tell me more?"
"Nae, dove. Ah wish ah could, bit ah know ye'll be able to handle it, so ah'm no' worried. Ye've a destiny to fulfil, as ah did."
"Hmm, the reluctant hero. I don't want that, Connor."
"Ye're capable of greatness. All of ye are so important to the chapters unfoldin' before ye. Ye
will live forever if ye want te. T'gether." She looks confused and he just chuckles in only a way he can. "Trust me, m'bonny lass. It's as it's meant t' be."

With a cry she jumps up and throws her arms around his neck and he holds her around the waist. She looks at him, eyes aflush with tears. His eyes were green again.
"It's alright," he smiles at her, holding her tightly. "Ah've never left ye. Ah've always been here." He looked over at the sword where his first wife and he himself lay beneath the dirt. How ironic. "An' ah never will... but it's time fer ye tae move on wi' yer life." She was crying openly now; she'd not done so for his death until now. It was all anger, bitterness and inebriation. Two decades of pain and suffering flows out of her heart as he rubs her back, letting her get it all out. "Life is te be lived, dove. Ye can' let it go by withou' ye." She nods and sniffles, her face buried in the shoulder of his knitted sweater. "Oh, an' that thing ye wanted te dae wi' the katana? It's a wonnerful sentiment. He won' mind." She lifts her head, sniffles and nods. He places a gentle kiss upon her brow and puts her feet back into the grass. The sky is bluer than orange now, Twilight is upon them, fast approaching.
"I'll miss you, Connor..." she sighs into his chest.
"An' ah'll miss ye."
"Will we see each other again?" He grins, his eyes alight with the sun as they go blue again.
"Some time, ah'm certain. Ye'll get yerself intae trouble again, ah'm sure. It's the life of an immortal."
"But I don't want to say goodbye. I don't want to fall apart again."
"M' sweet bonny lassie, ah'll say it fer ye. Besides, ye'll need te wake up soon, he's wonderin' why ye're cryin' in yer sleep."
"What? I am?" She wipes at her eyes then opens them again... and he's gone. His traditional Gaelic farewell lingering on the Highland winds. Again, she's alone and she can't stop the tears from streaming down her face. The dam wall has burst...

She opens her eyes in the dark, vision blurred by hot, saltwater...

Etienne's already awake. Attuned to her emotions as he is, he'd woken up quite awhile ago. He reaches out to cup Renee's cheek tenderly. "What is troubling you, mon bijou?" He asks gently.

She utters a cry and rolls over into his arms, crying again. As hard as she'd cried in Connor's arms. She has no will left to control it anymore. "Twenty years. Twenty years I held it in and I fall apart in a second..." Her legs curl up between them. She feels utterly vulnerable for the first time in decades. Her shoulders quake as she lets herself weep. "I saw him," she finally chokes out, "He came to me in my dreams..."

Him?

Oh.

There was only one "Him" who could leave Renee like that. Etienne holds her tightly. "It's ok, love. Talk to me." He strokes her hair gently.

Her voice is strained, muffled. She's speaking quickly as if to either get it all out faster... or her mind is racing. "I was standing on the hill in Glencoe where we'd married... and then, he was there behind me. When I'd dreamed of him before, it was of things that'd already happened. My memories taunting me. This was different. He wanted to warn me of danger coming, to prepare me for it... and to release me." On the last she bursts into tears again. "I've felt so guilty for being in love with a man other than that I gave my vows to... but I do!" She looks up at him now, face pretty much broken. She has the look of a woman in obvious pain, but something has come through. "I do love you so very much, Etienne, I can't deny that." Whoa. Too much. She disappears into his chest again, her voice shuddering. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't be putting you through this..."

She's shaking her head. "It's not, it's not okay, you don't deserve that." She takes deep, shaky breath. "But he told me that I had to get on with my life, that I shouldn't feel badly about any kind of betrayal because he didn't want it any other way. Said that I had nothing to apologise for, nothing to feel guilty about." Her eyes are sore by now. Crying like that only hurts in the long run. "That I'd found someone who loves me as he does and gave me his blessing..." Her tears start up again, yet this time she's not sure why. She should be happy, right? She gripped to him tighter, curled up on herself tighter.

"He's really gone," she finally cries out, collapsing into a heap of stifled, bottled-up emotion. "He's really gone..."

Etienne rubs her back gently, long, slow circles, hoping to somehow soothe her. He doesn't know what to say, really. Everyone he's ever known, save for people he's met in the last coulple of months, has been dead for centuries; friends, family, lovers... Yet he still has no idea what to say, and feels useless, sending all of his love and affection through their Bond in an attempt to comfort her.

Her tears are starting to annoy her. They just don't want to stop. It's what one gets for stamping them down so long. Suddenly, Etienne's loving wishes are felt through their Bond, further cemented by his soothing hands upon her back. Tingles started up from the base of her spine and shot straight up to her neck. She drew back a hard breath and almost sprung to life, taking his bottom lip in between hers and uncurling her body to wrap around him instead.

She rolls them over so she's straddled on top of him, sighing and breathing hotly over his face. Her hands show no need to waste time, already removing the shirt he's wearing. "Make it all disappear," she whispers to him breathlessly, kissing him again. She's not taking prisoners at the moment. "I know you can make it all go away, my love..." He'd have to put up a hell of a fight to fend her off...
